Teachers should have previously taught the linear and quadratic function content. Students should be familiar with using the online graphing calculator, or this portion of the activity needs to be teacher supported. There will need to be additional staff available on the day that the catapults are tested so that students who decide to do the engineering project will have supervision as well as the students who are out testing their catapults.
For the final catapult assignments targets should be place at varying heights so that students are required to evaluate their function in order to determine the catapult placement.
Sample rubrics are provided here. If the activity is being done with a Language Arts teacher the grammar portion could be replaced by a different factor to avoid having students evaluated on the same standards in two classes.
